Redeemer Presbyterian Church - Traverse City, MI

This Lord’s Day we begin a new series on the Epistle of James. James has had an interesting reputation in the history of the Church. Famously, Reformer Martin Luther expressed his dissatisfaction with James by calling it a “gospel of straw” and desiring to see it moved to the back of the Bible. Since Luther’s day, many have followed him in his sentiment. In fact, your Roman Catholic friend may be quick to point out to you that the only time “faith alone” appears in the Bible is James 2:24 “You see that a person is justified by works and not faith alone.” For this reason, many have seen a disagreement between Paul and James on the matter of justification.
Is James a gospel of straw? Does he teach salvation by works? Allow me to borrow a phrase from the Apostle Paul: By no means! As we study this letter we will see the eternal value of wisdom, virtue and godly living. But we will also see that James has no fundamental disagreement with Paul. There is one thing they agree on completely - the only way one can by saved is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses. He most likely wrote this prayer during the forty years of wilderness wandering after the Exodus. In this Psalm, the man of God considers the comfort that is found in hiding ourselves in the eternal God of heaven. Moses identifies our sin as the source of our mortality (Ps. 90:7-8). But this Psalm also contains the gospel. In this Psalm, Moses prays and asks that God would “make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us” and “Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to your children”. God heard and answered Moses’ prayer by sending His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. In Jesus, God’s glorious power has been put on display for His children. Because in Jesus, God has ended the curse of death by paying the debt for sin at the cross. Jesus is the answer to Moses’ prayer. He is the answer to your prayer, too.

This Lord’s Day we conclude our series on the Gospel of John. John’s Gospel ends with the famous scene of Peter’s restoration. And in this scene we see the heart of the Gospel and the mission of Christ: to raise the dead by forgiving sinners.
